At Green Valley High School, it hardly matters who will lead student council. But try telling that to the candidates running and the people who love them (or hate them). The rest of their lives seem to hinge on who can get the most votes.
This high-energy musical comedy focuses on the electoral process from the perspective of 3 high school seniors. The race forces the candidates to consider the meaning of each vote and the importance of distinctive character in politics. While some of the students have no problem gaining approval from their peers, others act as though they'll stop at nothing to win the coveted position of student council president. In the process of trying to please everybody, the election unravels, alliances change, and the candidates learn what it takes to make themselves happy—and the value of individual dreams.
A note from the writers:
We didn't really like high school that much. So it's sort of funny that we've spent so much time for the last few years remembering all its nuances. But working together and hearing a quirky memory of high school become an exuberant song that we wanted to sing all day long has been the best endeavor we can imagine.
But then again, Steven and I never really saw VOTE! as a show about high school at all. Instead, VOTE! is about coming into your own, taking a stab at things in an effort to really be yourself (even if you fail) and how that is an intrinsic part of what it means to be young--and also to be an American.
I guess Steven and I don't do things the traditional way. But we sure do have a great time making friends and singing songs along the way. And just putting it out there! That's the best. Because "to vote (Write, sing, dance, break out on your own, live your dreams) is try/no matter how naive/ to take a chance/ and wear your dream on your sleeve/ you can't change the weather/ but you can put on a coat!/ you may not like who wins, but you've at least got to vote.”
